Operating on the Wiedemann effect, this non-contact slider magnetostrictive position sensor determines the absolute position of one or multiple permanent-magnet slider rings that glide frictionlessly along a hermetically sealed wave guide tube. The interrogation current pulse generates a torsional strain wave reflected back to the pickup coil; the elapsed time-of-flight directly correlates to slider distance with micron-level accuracy (±0.01% of full stroke) and outstanding repeatability (±0.001% FS). Unlike incremental encoders, the slider magnetostrictive displacement sensor retains absolute position upon power-cycling without homing routines. The wave guide is encased in aluminum or stainless profile with integral mounting slots, supporting up to 30 sliders simultaneously on a single 10-meter length. Data interfaces include SSI, CANopen, EtherCAT, and Profibus, with sampling rates reaching 5 kHz. The slider magnetostrictive position sensor's complete absence of mechanical wear ensures an MTBF exceeding 200,000 hours in high-cycle, high-vibration axes such as forming presses or saw positioning systems, where oil, dust, and metal chips are prevalent.
