This electromagnetic flow meter operates on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, where a conductive liquid moving through a magnetic field generates a voltage signal directly proportional to its average velocity. The electromagnetic flow meter uses a pair of excitation coils to produce the field and two electrodes to pick up the induced potential. Because there are no internal obstructions or moving parts, the flow path remains unobstructed, eliminating pressure loss and reducing maintenance. The output is linear over a wide range, making slurry flow meter ideal for custody transfer and process control in water treatment, pulp and paper, and chemical dosing. However, the fluid must have a minimum electrical conductivity, typically above 5 µS/cm, which excludes hydrocarbons, gases, and demineralized water. Installation requires a full pipe condition, and upstream straight runs are necessary to avoid swirl disturbances. Accuracy is unaffected by density, viscosity, or temperature changes within the sensor's rated range, yet electrode fouling can be an issue in abrasive slurries. Modern sewage flow meter feature digital signal processing and self-diagnostics, enabling remote monitoring and integration with distributed control systems for industrial automation.
