This insertion‑type impeller flow meter uses a small paddle wheel or propeller that penetrates into the pipe through a tapped fitting, with the rotational speed directly proportional to the fluid's average velocity at the insertion point. A hall‑effect or magnetostrictive sensor counts the passing blades as they rotate, generating a pulse train that is conditioned into a standard analog or digital output. The design is economical, lightweight, and easy to install without cutting the pipeline, using a hot‑tap tool even under moderate pressure. Response time is rapid, making the impeller flow meter suitable for surge detection, batching, and pump protection in water distribution, irrigation, and cooling circuits. However, the impeller intrudes into the flow, causing a slight pressure drop, and its accuracy depends on a fully turbulent, symmetrical velocity profile, requiring straight upstream runs. Any debris, fibers, or sticky coatings can clog the blades or alter the bearing friction, so the impeller flow transmitter is limited to clean, low‑viscosity liquids. Periodic re-calibration is needed because bearing wear changes the friction torque, especially at low speeds. Despite these drawbacks, its low initial cost and simple signal processing ensure wide use in non‑critical monitoring applications.
