This turbine flow meter relies on a free‑spinning rotor or bladed wheel placed centrally within the flow stream, with the angular velocity being linearly related to the volumetric flow rate through the pipe. As fluid passes, it imparts a tangential force on the blades, and a magnetic pickup or optical sensor counts the passing blades to generate a pulsed frequency output. The liquid turbine flow meter excels in clean, low‑viscosity liquids and gases, offering excellent repeatability and moderate accuracy suitable for batching, blending, and fuel dispensing. Because the rotor is a moving part, the turbine flow meter is susceptible to wear from particulates or high‑velocity flow, so upstream filtration and strainers are strongly recommended. Viscosity changes affect the rotor's drag and thus the calibration factor, limiting its use in heavy oils or non‑Newtonian fluids. Straight piping upstream and downstream is critical to establish a fully developed velocity profile. Maintenance involves periodic bearing replacement and cleaning, but the simple construction ensures long service life when operated within specified Reynolds number ranges. Smart transmitters provide temperature compensation and real‑time flow totalization.
