Also known as a variable‑area flowmeter, this metal tube floater flow meter consists of a vertically oriented tapered tube and a float that rises until the drag force from the upward fluid equals the float's submerged weight. The annular gap between the float and the tube wall increases as the float moves higher, allowing a pressure drop that remains constant regardless of flow rate. Made entirely from stainless steel, Hastelloy, or other alloys, the metal construction resists corrosion and handles high pressures and temperatures found in refinery and petrochemical services. The float position is transmitted via a magnetic coupling to an external indicator or a 4‑20 mA transmitter, eliminating the need for glass tubes that can shatter. Accuracy is moderate, typically around ±2‑4% of full scale, but repeatability is good for low‑flow applications such as additive injection, purge gas metering, and sampling systems. The meter must be installed vertically with flow moving upward, and metal float flow meter performs best with clean, single‑phase fluids.
