This vortex flow meter uses the von Karman effect, where an immersed bluff body generates alternating vertices downstream, and the shedding frequency is directly proportional to the flow velocity over a broad Reynolds number range. A piezoelectric or captive sensor detects the pressure fluctuations caused by each vortex, converting them into a digital frequency output that is insensitive to density and pressure variations. Since there are no moving components, the design is rugged and reliable, handling high temperatures and pressures found in steam lines, superheated gases, and corrosive chemical streams. The vortex flowmeter offers excellent turn down and can measure multiple phases, although very slow flows fail to produce stable vertices, setting a lower cutoff limit. Viscous fluids dampen the vortex formation, reducing accuracy, and pipe vibrations can introduce noise that mimics the shedding signal. Installation demands sufficient straight pipe lengths to avoid turbulence from elbows or valves. Advanced models incorporate spectral analysis to differentiate genuine vortex signals from mechanical noise, and optional temperature/pressure ports allow compensated mass flow calculations for energy management.
